Over 500 passionate entrepreneurs joined us to make a collective commitment to South Africa’s business backbone.
Earlier this week, on 21 October, we reached a significant milestone on our SMME journey, with the first edition of the #SanlamSMMECollective.
Held at the Sandton Convention Centre in collaboration with Sanlam Investments, Santam Insurance, and Sanlam Corporate, the event brought together more than 500 entrepreneurs, partners, and stakeholders to share their lived experiences in the SMME space. Attendees got to engage in valuable networking sessions, panel discussions and keynote addresses from experts in the field.
“These businesses are the cornerstone of South Africa’s and Africa’s economy. They need to be involved in the conversations about what SMMEs need to not only survive, but thrive in the current economy,” says Oletilwe Ramashala, Head of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships.“That is why events like this need to exist – we need to make the circle bigger so more of these businesses can leave their mark in our communities”.

Vibrant creativity and youthful energy were also front and centre at the event, with theYouth4Business (Y4B) Art Exhibition. The exhibition welcomed guests to witness the incredible work of young artists who have poured their passion and creativity into pieces that reflect their identities, cultures, and communities. The theme, “Rise and Resonate”, invited participants to explore the power of growth and impact, the power of elevation – whether personal, communal, or spiritual – and the lasting influence and emotional connection that art can create.
Together, the theme encourages works that reflect transformation, empowerment, and the ripple effect of meaningful expression. It’s a call to create art that uplifts and echoes beyond its moment, inspiring others and leaving a lasting impression. The result was a stunning array of artworks, photographs, and videos that captured the diverse experiences of South African youth.
This initiative is more than an art showcase — it’s a platform for empowerment. By giving young people the tools and opportunities to express themselves, Sanlam and its partners aim to foster entrepreneurship and enable youth to contribute meaningfully to the economy and society.
The Youth4Business initiative is a collaborative effort between Sanlam and the Youth Employment Service (YES), designed to unlock youth potential and stimulate growth in the economy. Youth are provided with resources and support to manage their businesses and ensure their sustainability.
This exhibition reflects Sanlam’s broader mission: to tackle unemployment and uplift local communities. Through this initiative, Sanlam continues to equip individuals with entrepreneurial skills that drive economic growth and foster cultural appreciation.
As a purpose-led company, Sanlam believes in empowering generations to be financially confident, secure, and prosperous. The company’s investment in youth is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to improve their lives. Collaborating with YES is a proud extension of this mission, and Sanlam encourages other corporates to join in making a sustained, meaningful impact.
The journey to the exhibition began in April, when Youth4Business invited young creatives to submit work aligned with the theme. Finalists were selected based on creativity, relevance, and impact. The result was a breathtaking exhibition that showcased the depth of talent among South African youth.
Three winners were announced during the event and received prizes to the total amount of R37000 in equipment vouchers to support their creative entrepreneurial journeys.
Guests were also encouraged to support these young artists by purchasing the exhibited works, offering a chance to invest in the future of South African creativity.

This exhibition is a powerful reminder of the potential that lies within our youth. By continuing to create opportunities for them to shine, we unlock not only their abilities but also the future of our nation.
Sanlam and YES remain committed to empowering the next generation to enter the workforce with confidence.
Together, we can make a difference — one opportunity, one artist, one initiative at a time.
