About Cancer Cover

Comprehensive cover for cancer

A cancer diagnosis can take a serious toll on you and your loved ones. Even if you have medical aid and gap cover, treatment can be very expensive and place a strain on your finances at an already difficult time. That’s why we’ve introduced Sanlam Cancer Cover. It provides comprehensive cover for cancers, tumours, leukaemias and lymphomas as well as early cancers, and pays you a lump sum to help you manage costs like missed work days, childcare or transport to treatment centres.

Cancer vs Cancer Plus

Our cancer cover is available under two ranges:

This benefit takes into account the true impact of cancer on your life and finances and provides more affordable cover with impact-based payments. It always pays out 100% of the cover amount for certain aggressive cancers.
Cancer Plus
This benefit covers the same claim events as the Cancer benefit, but allows for maximum possible payouts.

Why Sanlam Cancer Cover?

Personalised cover up to R6 million
Premiums from as little as R100 pm

Cancer Catch-all

To provide even more comprehensive cover, our cancer benefit includes a Cancer Catch-all feature. Catch-all claim events cover a variety of situations where a disease is not explicitly listed as a claim event, but seriously affects your health and ability to function. Maximum entry age
This is the maximum age at which you can take out the cover. There are two options available:
  • Term Cover: the maximum entry age is 59 and your cover will end at age 64.
  • Whole Life Cover: the maximum entry age is 64 and you will be covered for cancer for your whole life.
Eligibility and waiting periods
You do not qualify for cancer cover if you currently have cancer. However, if you’re in remission, you may be able to take out cover depending on factors like the type and stage of cancer as well as how long you’ve been in remission. There is no general waiting period for cancer cover, but there is a survival period of 14 days.
Cancer cover vs medical aid
Cancer cover doesn’t replace your medical aid or gap cover but it can supplement your other cover if you’re diagnosed with cancer. It can also help with additional or hidden costs like travel to treatment centres, living expenses, at-home care, child care and missed work days.
What’s covered
Sanlam provides proper cover for cancer and the most prevalent cancer-related severe illnesses, including leukaemias, lymphomas and malignant or cancerous tumours. It also provides comprehensive cover for early cancers including skin cancer as well as wide cover for benign brain tumours. It includes a list of specified aggressive cancers covered at 100% from stage I, even under the more affordable Cancer benefit option. Sanlam Cancer Cover also includes our Cancer Catch-all feature. Catch-all claim events cover a variety of situations where a disease is not explicitly listed as a claim event, but seriously affects your health and ability to function. Catch-all claim events will only be considered if you do not also qualify for other claim events.
Cover amount
Cancer cover can range from R50 000 to R6 million. The amount you qualify for will be determined by our financial underwriting process.
Claims process
Because we understand that claims are submitted under very difficult and distressing circumstances, we’ve kept the process as simple and straightforward as possible. All claims can be submitted online in a few easy steps, and we’re here to help you every step of the way.
Premium increases
Your cover can be automatically adjusted every year for inflation. Doing so ensures that should you need to submit a claim against your policy several years from now, your cover will still carry the same relative value as it does the day you took it out.
It may sound complicated, but underwriting is essentially the process your insurance provider uses to determine your risk status. This in turn affects your cover amount and monthly premiums, and establishes whether any terms and conditions apply to your policy.    To help our underwriters calculate your status, you’ll be asked to supply information relating to your health, medical history, occupation and financial situation as well as details about where you’ve travelled or plan to travel and any potentially dangerous activities you participate in. You may also be required to complete a medical test.    Our underwriting process is designed to ensure that you pay a fair premium for the full term of your cover and that your beneficiaries are able to claim confidently when the time comes. As carrying more risk for our clients forms part of our underwriting philosophy, your policy will remain unaffected should you change your occupation or smoking habits or take up risky activities after it has been issued.
Legal incapacity
As a Licensed Financial Services and Registered Credit Provider, we’re prevented by law from paying out a claim to any client who has lost their legal capacity to act. So, to ensure that we’re still able to take care of you if you’re unable to take care of yourself, we’ve put the Sanlam Protector Umbrella Trust in place. By giving your consent upfront, we’re able, should you lose your legal capacity to act, to pay your tax-free lump sum to the Trust, where it will be managed on your behalf – this protects against a delay in payment at a time when you and your family need financial support the most.
